CHAPTER 3. "Hypertext, hypermedia and multimedia"
February 22nd, 2010

Hypertext
Hypertext refers to links among textual items, often indicated by underlined blue type that when they are clicked, takes the reader to the referent.

Hypermedia

Hypermedia refers to similar links as those used in hypertext, but instead of simply linking text to text, linking various media, such as sound, images, animation and/or video.

Multimedia

Multimedia refers to many of the same ideas associated with hypermedia, but the difference is that multimedia tends to feature several media types including text, sound, video and/or animations.

Antecedents of Multimedia

The idea of multimedia is not new. The tools wich would make multimedia possible: the mouse pointing device; a windows interface; word processing and electronic mail were all developed there in 1950s and 1960s.

Science Fiction and CALL

Science fiction has long been a rich ground for speculation about the use of the computers and, in many ways, serves to offer idealized visions of learning without concern for the constraints of technology that lag behind imagination.

The use of human-like avatars is not far-fetched; the technology, although sometimes clumsy to manipulate with a keyboard or mouse, is already in place and widely used un gaming situations. The applications to CALL, however, have not been widely exploited.

The printed book and CALL

Schools provide learners with not just a body of knowledge, but the tools to modify and expand that knowledge beyond their formal classroom education.

Weyer (1982) points out that the organizing devices of a book make it a useful tool for a reader whose needs match its organization. But he also outlines the problems that occur when there ir a mismatch between the learner's mental model of a body of a text and its organization and organizing devices.

Applications to general learning

Hypertext, hypermedia and multimedia also overcome other limitations of the book by making use of the computer's ability to search through vast databases of text and images and form new and unexpected links in the material.

Applications of multimedia to language learning
Mntali and Lewandowski (1996) review studies conducted with first language secondary school students favouring mulimedia as a way of improving reading skills among average and less-skilled readers. They suggest that readers who enjoy reading tend to read more and are more motivated to read and that a computer can be useful in promoting interest.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HYPERMEDIA AND MULTIMEDIA

Uses of the blog*

Students can post an opinion about an article they read and the classmates can see it and agree and disagree on that opinion.

Another use of blogs can be that the teacher can post useful information for students such as vocabulary related to the topic they studied in class.

Uses of IWB*

in presentations of vocabulary words or to answer exercises related to a specific topic.

Uses of Skype*

>Some teachers are using skype to involve parents by an onlime meeting.

>Videoconferences in the classroom for language learning, students can have the session saved and then they can reply it as many times as they need.

>You can share experiences of traveling with your class.

Uses of Wiki*

>Upload homeworks, remove them, and edit every page using a web browser.

>You can make plans and you friends can edit them or add some other events maybe for a trip.

>For job purposes, if you use your computer at home and at work, you can access from anywhere and edit or add topics on your wiki.

Uses of a discussion board*

A discussion board can be used with the purpose of teaching a language. How? for example in the carrer we have a blackboard where we can to talk in real time and to have a conversation.

Also teacher can give to students assigments to do for home, easier.

And students can share their doubts and with help of the teacher they can find the right answer and to understand better a topic.
